Is Popcorn Safe for Cats?

Popcorn is popular as a snack. Popcorns are cheap and easy to prepare. They are good at passing the time especially when one is watching a movie. They are also used during festivals such as Christmas and also on birthday parties. Cats are always curious and like to have a bit of everything we seem to be enjoying. Can we share popcorns with our cats? Is popcorn safe for cats?

Are popcorns safe for cats?

Popcorns are carbohydrates though they also contain vitamin B, iron, and minerals. Cats like taking fresh and hot popcorn. Not all nutrients that are found in popcorns are beneficial to your cat. Therefore, you should feed your cat popcorn in moderation. Additives on popcorn are not healthy for your cat. They contain butter, caramel, and cheese, which are not safe for mature cats.

Moreover, butter popcorns can fatten felines and cause them to be overweight if they are served for a long time. Again, cheese contains garlic and onion powder, which may cause your kitty some health problems. Kittens may also choke on popcorns or experience abdominal pain. A growing kitten requires proteins and taurine, which are essential to felines’ growth. Popcorn does not contain protein and taurine.

Health benefits on feeding your cat popcorn

Flavored popcorns should be avoided completely since they may lead to stomach upset, vomiting, high blood pressure, and nausea. Too much salt in popcorn may lead to heart failure. You should always monitor your cat after feeding it on something new. If you notice any form of discomfort in your mouser, contact your vet immediately. Again, keep in mind that cats require meat for their nutrition. Therefore, popcorns should be given strictly as a treat.

Conclusion

Plain and air-popped popcorns are not harmful to cats. However, added flavor makes popcorns toxic and may even lead to death. Avoid giving popcorns to your kitty completely.
